Hi @Fred123 I moved your post into this one about buying safe Cots, Strollers and other infant products. @BrendanMays made a comment in Oct last year (post just before your’s) about how 4 failed CHOICE testing. There are also a few other comments about Cots on the site and it seems it is still a struggle to get safe products in this market.
CHOICE tests a lot of cots and portable cots, and we consistently find that too many cot mattresses are not firm enough.
A mattress that isn’t firm enough can create a risk of suffocation for infants - this is a serious issue.
We’re looking for any mums or dads in the Community who have concerns about the safety of cots being sold in Australia, and who would be willing to speak to a journalist about this.
By getting involved, you will be helping us campaign for better, stronger safety laws in…
Thanks @meltam and @vax2000 , we appreciate the support.
Following up from our calls for better product safety laws, we’ve released our portacots review , showing that 10 out of 12 fail key safety tests.
Q/ The greatest risk in not taking some responsibility and prescribing outcomes?
A/ ‘as recommended by the manufacturer’.
What needs to be prescribed are the outcomes and key test or acceptance criteria.
The ‘how’ in delivering the safe outcomes is where innovation might prove useful.
Our world is full of prescription, including
minmum heights of the hand rails on balconies and decks,
minimum strength of hand rails and their end anchor points,
maximum size of openings in balustrades,
balu…

For example back in my baby days I had two very thin foam mattresses for my babies bassinet as the mattresses would become very wet due to perspiration and if not dried out each day they became mouldy even though there were “breathing holes” in the b…

Many of you will know that CHOICE has always tested babies’ and kids’ products, but did you know how much we do to monitor the industry and ensure that safe products are sold to consumers?
Our expert testers including @AntonioBonacruz and Matthew Tung sit on Standards Australia committees for children’s products, and these groups have been instrumental in bringing about many safety changes. This includes a voluntary mattress firmness test for mattresses supplied with cots, which the ACCC is now…
Did you know that cot mattresses sold in Australia don’t need to meet basic safety standards? CHOICE is asking the safety regulator, the ACCC, to make the cot mattress firmness test mandatory. A mattress that’s too soft increases the risk of suffocation.
