Car manufacturing issue affecting multiple owners - what to do?

Am posting on here as we’re one of multiple new car owners who have found their vehicle has a significant issue and a manufacturer who appears to show no concern for their consumers. It’s fast turning in to a nightmare as we’re stuck with the vehicle, and no way forward it seems.

In our research to try and find out what the cause of the issue was, we found several online groups of Ssangyong Musso owners who are having the same issue:

  • The cause of a significant vibration can not be conclusively identified
  • A number of owners have tried various fixes, some have success (e.g. wheel balancing, changing tyres, tailshafts etc) but many without success.
  • Ssangyong are well aware of the issue as these group members have contacted them individually.
  • Ssangyong have demonstrated no interest in acknowledging the extent of the issue. Their standard response (if you get one at all from them) seems to be that it is ‘normal ride quality’.
  • Members of the group have evidence (such as senior mechanics taking a test drive and agreeing there is a problem) to show that the issue is significant enough that Ssangyong should be taking this more seriously.

As for our own situation, the dealership we purchased the vehicle from tried a couple of things to fix the issue with our vehicle, then washed their hands of us and said we had to go to the manufacturer. We are aware of our rights under Australian Consumer Law, and requested a Right to Remedy (refund) with the dealership, however they declined. We have been advised that to go down the legal route it would cost over $20K and take over a year to get any outcome.

I’m interested to know if anyone has had a successful outcome with a dealership and/or vehicle manufacturer. It’s crazy as a consumer we are in this position.

Welcome to the Community @MyNewCar_IsALemon,

Vehicle manufacturers have an ignoble history of responding to design problems (a lemon product) as well as an individual customer’s problem (a lemon vehicle).

There are some related topics that suggest it is not just SSangyong but also a number of old-line ‘respected’ brands. Most of the following topics are old but answering your question (for most manufacturers) is essentially ‘no’ in the general case, but sometimes perseverance pays.

Choice has been looking at this for some years without the traction we consumers would hope for. Tactics that have helped specific individuals include such as this one (and many others, often about Jeep)

as well as taking it to TV

Hi I am the person with the faulty BMW timing chain. When it broke 14 weeks ago and damaged the engine we towed it to BMW Ruschutters Bay. They have fitted a new? Engine but we still cannot seem to get the car back. We will be paying for labour.
