Warning Regarding Potting Mixes

An article regarding the Victorian Government warning the public about the dangers involved in using potting mixes without taking precautions.

Whilst it is a Victorian article, it obviously also applies everywhere else.

In July 2016, I contracted pneumonia and I was the sickest I have ever been in my life. I blame the cause on my handling and mixing of compost and manure from bags to produce a blend for planting new plants.

I was not wearing a mask but I now wear a respirator when I handle them.

Yes the simple act of wearing a dust mask before handling compost or soils or potting mixes and washing hands and face after handling can very substanially reduce the risk of not only Legionnaires but also other pathogens that are in these products. Always good to be reminded of the simple safety precautions.
