Wages Theft Cases

I suspect that if the employment market operated in general on the same productivity criteria that some farmers seem to think is fair, then we would have 90% unemployment in this country. That of course is ludicrous, and not of course what happens.

Another one.

Another article regarding the disgusting behaviour of the owners of United Petroleum.

From now on I will not be going to United again.

An absolute shocker.

So bad that ASIC actually did something.

The business owes many creditors and not just wages. The ATO has a privileged position.

My take on the circumstances is the proprietors of the scheme were sloppy in leaving a trail that became evidence. The stripping of assets from a business about to fail might describe what transpired with Clive Palmer’s Queensland Nickel ventures. Despite numerous court actions involving sums of money closer to 100 times more than the recent examples leading to convictions, Clive remains at large. (Pun intended.)

Unlikely, although.

Working long hours in the hot sun is apparently not for everyone?

Once upon a time Aussie school children paraded each morning in the open air, rain hail or shine, sat in class rooms with no fans or air conditioning, breathed the dust of the lunch time playing fields, battered toes in sandals and sweaty heads of tangled hair (hats optional).

For todays parents the blessings of the KR school assembly halls program, state school’s air conditioning programs and sun smart clothing are welcome improvements. Bloodied knees from lunchtime play and busted toes from kicking balls in sandals or barefoot can bring the wrath of a million page admin procedure.

While our expectations of how to best treat our growing children have changed, have they been better equiped for the realities of all types of work? Should we accept lesser for our guest workers than our own? We may have outsourced more than the jobs our school leavers are not attuned to.

As consumers many of us want to be able to make informed decisions, and purchase products environmentally and responsibly sourced and delivered. Do the responsibilities extend to moral obligations of fair and equitable treatment of others?

28 April marks the start of minimum award hourly pay for horticulture workers, and changes to the piecework scam. Workers will have to paid a minimum wage, regardless of how many things they pick, how many things they fill.
Now we need Fair Work to crack down on other industries where workers are being exploited.
