An option is to set up your own vpn server using a compatible modem/router. For online purposes, such as paid streaming video, it will appear that you are still connected using the same Australian ip adress/ISP. It also provides secure encrypted connections to your own modem/router when using dubious wifi connections.

But, take care leaving your home router/modem/pc on as they are susceptible to damage in storm events…ensure adequate phone line and power protections. It also uses your electricity.

Whilst I haven’t tried it myself, it could also be potentially a option where the commercial VPN is blocked in a particular country one is travelling to. We have found that commercial VPNs which work in Australia have not necessarily worked in other countries…or where they did, they worked very slowly making them almost unusable.
