Transferring data from old mobile to a new mobile

Hi,
I am aware of a large amount of online advice on this issue. From what is evident it appears that the assumption is made that both mobiles are operative.
In our case the existing mobile has been effectively shutdown from the Catch (Optus) network so has no connectivity to the net. Basically a dead phone.
Not being technically smart, I am reaching out to those members who are way above my pay grade for some simple advice on which is the best way to do a data transfer to the replacement mobile. Should I use a cable connection or will a Bluetooth connection/transfer still work successfully? I am not sure what the repercussions are for not having a connection to the net or phone account provider with my old phone when attempting the transferring of the existing data.
Thanking you in advance.

It would be useful to know the model of the phones (old one and new one).

Do you have a PC?

Some manufacturers provide support/apps for transferring data, which can make data transfer easier.

Also, does the old phone have a microSD in it, which can be transferred to the new phone?

First things first: your existing phone will still be able to connect to the Internet via wifi. The fact that it no longer has any mobile phone or data services does not affect its ability to connect to wifi.

To answer the question about using a cable: you would be able to transfer data from the old to the new phone without using a cable, via wifi or bluetooth. I’d recommend using a cable if you have the right type of cable on hand, but wifi / bluetooth will work OK if you don’t.

Exactly how the “copy from other device” is done depends on whether it’s an Android phone or an iPhone, but both types of new phone will helpfully offer to copy apps and data from another phone to the new one when you first start it up, and will guide you through the process.

It can copy either directly between the two devices with a USB cable or a wifi or Bluetooth connection, or by retrieving a backup from the Google account (Android) or Apple ID (iPhone) that the old phone was linked to.

If you have the old device and it’s still working, you don’t need access to the Internet during this process – the copy happens directly between the two phones.

If the old device wasn’t working or wasn’t available (lost, stolen, or dead), then the copying process would need to access a Google or Apple backup, and that does require access to the Internet. All that means is that you would need to connect the new phone to your wifi before copying can happen. The new device will lead you through that if necessary.

Given that you still have the other phone and it’s still functional, go ahead and see if you can copy directly from the old to the new phone. Have a cable ready, or make sure the old phone is connected to your wifi and has bluetooth turned on, then start up the new phone and follow its instructions.

Before you start that, you might have a look at the relevant online guide for your phone type to get an idea of what to expect.

Let us know how you get on!

Firstly, is it possible to sign up to a new provider? Amaysim may be a good bet as it too runs on the Optus network. You can sign up and order a new SIM online. Once you install the new SIM everything should be back to normal. There’s a slight chance that if you bought your phone directly from Catch then it might be locked to their service. If so, don’t despair as there are plenty of phone repair places which can unlock your phone.

Secondly, and this is most important, your phone should be set to back up automatically to the cloud. That’s either iCloud for Apple phones or something like Google for Android phones. That way, if your phone fails or is stolen you can easily set up your replacement phone by using the saved backup. There’s no excuse for anyone to fail to do regular backups.

Firstly, thank you to those members who responded to my initial email.
After purchasing a specific connecting cable from JB HiFi I was able to transfer the data successfully Without any issues.
The new phone had a provision for transferring all of the existing data.
Using the connecting cable reduced the possibility of any WIFI issues arising during the data transfer.
