Theft Prevention

This technology seems to go well ‘beyond’.

Will this ‘wondrous’ technology get it wrong? How often? How will shoppers react if and when it does and locks them in? Would it be tantamount to false imprisonment even if only for a brief time? Woolies has been ‘selling’ electronic receipts for a long time; a delay in receiving one and being challenged? It could get interesting.

The most obvious problem will be when a person enters the store but doesn’t find what they want to buy, therefore not having the required receipt to get out. I ‘shop’ like this occasionally. The biggest issue I have with Woolworths these days is their annoying camera which halts your self checkout purchase if it detects you have ‘unscanned’ articles in your trolley (i.e. bags). They don’t seem to tolerate the notion that some of their customers purchase elsewhere first or bring their own bags, at the same time rarely having a full-time attendant at the self checkouts to correct the situation.
