I read with interest your review on stick blenders.
I am concerned that you say that “Need to oil the drive shaft every few months with Vaseline.”
I am not sure BAMIX recommend this, on their website they state “Adding a few drops of food-safe or vegetable oil in the drive shaft will also help maintain performance.”
I would be sticking to what the manufacturer recommends.
It appears that it might be error on Choice’s (@Pru) part - thanks for drawing the discrepancy to Choice’s attention.
The manual for the stick blender also recommends vegetable oil as well. Hopefully Choice on reading your feedback will update their stick review page for the Braun.
From the Vaseline site it states that Vaseline meets FDA standards as a Food Safe product.
"Another myth surrounding petroleum jelly is that it is toxic.
In fact, Vaseline® Jelly meets FDA requirements for being safe for human consumption. Of course, Vaseline® Jelly is designed to work wonders for dry skin – so you should not be adding it to your breakfast cereal or list of essential kitchen ingredients any time soon!"
It is a mixture of mineral oil and waxes. The mineral oils and waxes, even the food safe ones recommended for use on our cutting boards are petroleum products. Vaseline is thus very similar to the food grade mineral oils they recommend using, it just has a more solid quality due to the waxes. I wouldn’t be one to eat lots of it as it was at one time used as a laxative, it isn’t adsorbed by the body in the same way liquid food safe paraffin is not adsorbed. There is some discussion if these types of products can interfere with fat soluble vitamin (A, D, E, and K) adsorption, this is about ingestion of amounts needed to have a laxative effect. It is only recommended for external use but when applied to our lips for wind burn protection we do consume it in minor quantities. I don’t think it would be a major issue if applied to a Bamix or similar utensil in the small amounts required. There are other Vaseline similar petrolatum jellies out there, their purity is not established and should be avoided.
