Any one have any experience with the companies that do Pipe Lining.
Had one who advertises on radio first saying price to view with camera was 225 . But after ringing someone that came down to 175. The Quote to reline was $8000 and at the bottom said “you have saved $6000 today”" whatever that meant
That isn’t an insignificant amount of work. Being $8000, I would be getting at least two other quotes from different reputable plumbers.
I can see where pipe lining has applications. An example being in areas where excavating and replacing a pipe is challenging - narrow corridor between buildings insufficient for equipment access, under concrete/buildings etc.
This is pressure sales technique. Getting you to accept the quote…without the opportunity for additional quotes to be obtained. It is highly possible the $8000 is an inflated price.
Some more details might assist others to understand the task or offer feedback. Most recently the local council refined the concrete twin culvert on the road leading to our front gate. It was all over in a couple of hours with two guys on the job. There are other situations where relining is performed. Depending on the type of pipe and service duty. Often it’s more economical to replace. Even if it requires a specialist machine to drill under obstacles.
It may assist if you can share:
- What material, internal size and length is the section of pipe to repair?
- What is the duty or use of the pipe?
- Can you describe the failure?
Some relining methods rely on the damaged old pipe retaining most of its original strength and are only suitable for fixing leaks.
Had mine done a year ago, whilst renovating kitchen, house 50 years old, in Perth. Paid about 8000. Seemed better than digging etc, old pipes were a mess w chronic poor drainage. I’m happy w the job and online descriptions were good.
Are you able to share some details of the scope to assist others when comparing against their needs?
- Were you able to view the internal inspection video and photos prior to agreeing to the scope and price/work proceeding?
- How many days did the work take, how many workers for the job and for how long were you without a sewer connection?
- Approximately what length of pipework was repaired?
- Were any other items of work required such as root clearing, pipe replacement or inspection pit installation?
- Are you able to describe the method of relining used? Often a Cured in Place Pipe (CIPP for short) for the situation you described.

To also to consider that there will be situations where a repair by relining is practical and the most cost effective. There will also be circumstances where excavation and replacement may be practical with few access impediments and a less expensive alternative. New pipework will use modern construction and materials which are more resistant to damage and failures that occur with older systems such as terracotta piping. Previous advice in this topic has been to obtain multiple quotes. A caution against obtaining just one quote or accepting without question the recommended solution of the business quoting.
Sorry, i was unclear: the pipe that needed relining was the waste drainage from kitchen sink to just outside the laundry door. An investigation w photos indicated the galvanised pipe was in very poor condition, confirmed by the guys who subsequently did the relining. Took around 3 days, about 9m, cost over 8000 plus gst. Firstly they milled out the pipe which took about 2 days, wasnt straightforward apparently. Then they inserted a “resin-coated liner into the existing pipe, creating a new, structurally sound pipe within the old one.” As I was in the midst of having the kitchen renovated, the relining was done on an urgent basis coz I’d thought I simply needed the pipe to be cleared of blockages. Ha.
My pricing info will be far out of date as I had my sewer pipe relined over a short section several years ago. However, I can say that the job was very successful.
Tree roots had broken the pipe and had entered it in the vicinity of where our pipe entered the sewer mains. We had had it cleared out several times and was happy to do that until it needed doing every few months which is when I engaged Fallons in Brisbane to reline the pipe.
Fallons have a reputation for not being a cheap mob to hire but they did a good job, guaranteed for ten years. Their method was to insert a polymer (I think!!!) sock (my word not theirs) into the pipe to the point where the pipe was damaged and then inflate the “sock” with compressed air such that the “sock” blew out like a balloon to line the inside of the pipe. They then trim the ends so that fluids can pass through. I forget the ins and outs but obviously they have glue of some sort on the outside of the “sock” so that it adheres to the inside of the pipe. This repair was done 15 metres down the pipe from the nearest inspection opening and something like three metres underground. Not a job that you would want to do by digging down and, anyway, I would have had to knock down a shade house and remove a macadamia tree to get physical access otherwise, so an internal repair was ideal.
I vaguely recall that the cost was about $4000 but that was probably about 12 years ago. It was an afternoon job taking only about 2 - 3 hours at most for two men. Probably more like two hours but it was a long time ago and my memory is hazy on the exact time. Nonetheless, it did not take an inconvenient amount of time.
I have had the repaired section inspected internally with a camera in the intervening years since and the repair has held good.
I should also have mentioned that my sewer pipe is pvc.
