Seeking: the most OTT hot cross buns

You might remember that few years ago we tracked down the weirdest and wackiest hot cross bun flavours we could find: https://www.choice.com.au/food-and-drink/bread-cereal-and-grains/bread/articles/crazy-hot-cross-buns

There was the Cadbury Creme Egg/hot cross bun toastie, bubblegum-flavoured hot cross buns and (possibly the worst culinary crime we found) Vegemite and cheese hot cross buns.

Chances are, what we thought was ‘out there’ in 2019 is old hat now, so tell us - what weird and wonderful hot cross bun flavours have you seen on sale this year?

Trying to be different (at only $70/kg):

I must be missing something. Are they suggesting that other Hot Cross buns have animal protein in them?

Me too, what is it at $70 a kg plus postage I am missing out on? Some kind of dietary supplement? Bun mix?

A few odd ball varieties.

Some of those actually sound nice. :yum:

Oh, this gold - thank you! I mean, it also sounds revolting but it’ll be perfect for the article. (And is quite possibly the most expensive hot cross bun product on the market.) Thanks for sharing!

The power of commercialising a product, beyond it’s origins and making it readily available to fill that void post New Year until the arrival for those who do of Easter/Passover/…

I’ll be sticking to the more traditional product and only as required. Well mostly. They are delicious anytime of the year.

Fortunately Sacramental bread and wine appear to have been passed over in favour of exploitation of the bun.

Now upgraded to 365 days a year.

“So strong is the demand for hot cross buns that Coles now makes them available all year round from its bakery section.”

The things that Coles will do solely to keep their customers happy.

There are some very weird choices out there.I don’t mind the chocolate ones but i probably won’t go any further than that

Don’t know where else to ask, but are there any good hot cross buns out there that still have peel in them? Many seem on intent on leaving it out which to me is just not a hot cross bun! Thanks !

I had one for breakfast, sourdough HCBs made by a vendor at the local growers market
Waaaay better than the mushy white ones bought from Woolies.
