I’ve noted Bunnings and others locally in SE QLD were still selling smoke alarms which do not meet the regulations which will apply to all residential properties as of 01Jan2027. The updated regulations have been mandatory for several years for all new homes, rentals and existing properties as a condition of sale.
Depending on access to ceiling spaces etc the basic options are for wireless interconnected alarms or hardwired alarms. The wireless interconnected alarms which must meet the Australian Standards are also required to have a battery which is not replaceable and has a working life of ten years.

If it’s as many as 1.2 million homes to upgrade over 7 months - It’s going to generate around $1B of additional revenue across the suppliers and installers based on the suggested costs. Also a risk due to demand where not so aware consumers or those feeling anxious about complying may pay more than is fair or reasonable. Assumes there is the capacity to meet the level of demand in addition to the every day workloads of the installers.
