Plug in heated towel rail - user experiences?

In a recent Choice article, the use of a heated towel rail (plug in version) was mentioned as a “must have” for winter. Unfortunately I can’t see that Choice have done a review of these yet, so I’m wondering if anyone in the Choice community has had any experience to share about these please?

Hi, @Pammo! Welcome to the Community.

I have no personal experience with heated towel rails, but this RACV article about them might be useful:

My wife and I have used them in accommodation when we have travelled. We found them to be brilliant, damp towels dry overnight, they are wonderfully warm when getting dried on a cool/cold morning. As we didn’t have the power cost of running them, I can’t comment on the economy of their use.

Apparently they tend to be 60W-200W depending on size, and you wouldn’t have to run them all day, every day. So they wouldn’t use a great deal of power.

If I were buying, I’d look for ones with a timer - or include something like this add-on timer kit.

We installed the heated towel rails when we built our house 25 years ago and now wouldnt go without them. We have a cheap timer on them so they turn on about an hour before shower time and turn off soon after. Having a nice warm towel to dry with on a cold morning is really pleasant. The added bonus and original reason for installing them is over cold periods in winter the towel actually dries instead of being damp continually between showers. We have found about 1.5 hours running time is sufficient to dry and warm the towels effectively. Our heated towel rails are rated at 65w (we havent measured to confirm this).
PS we tried to get power points with built in timers but they were not available when we built.

A simple alternative for some may be to toss the towels in the cloths drier. Most have an option to fluff or warm or to simply set on low for 10 minutes. Our bathroom and laundry are co-joined.
