OZERTY - watch out!

I just tried to buy a pair of $26 thermal gloves from OZERTY. Free postage, they offered. And suddenly, mysteriously, the email credit card receipt from them was about $60!! I have immediately requested to cancel the order -let’s see how that works out. In the small print at the end of the order confirmation there is some palaver about if you want to cancel then make another order and cancel both of them. You can imagine I’m not rushing to do that. In my request to cancel immediately, I included a statement that if they were unable to fulfil my request I would be taking the matter to the ACCC, and I also mentioned I am an active member of choice

Also consider contacting your credit card issuer and asking for a chargeback. There are time limits to do that so unless you get quick joy from the supplier, I would be going down that route.

News for Ozerty isn’t good:

There are reports online they are a scam business, possibly located in China (website suggests it is a UAE business), set up to harvest customer details. There are reports they use harvested details to make new charges to cards sometime in the future. They also use country names in the URL to suggest their business is something they are not (a common mojo for scam websites).

Based on this, it is important you contact your card issuer and advise that you may have inadvertently given your card details to scammers, through a scam shopping website.

Your card issuer should cancel your existing card and issue you with a new one.

Also request a chargeback for the transaction.

Unfortunately ACCC won’t be able to do anything. Instead lodge a report with Scamwatch.

Ozerty has very poor reviews online such as from Trustpilot and ProductReview (it has a 1 rating on that site). Most rate it as a scam, most have difficulty in getting funds back and/or items not being delivered.

Based on those types of feedback, I would suggest you start a chargeback request as also recommended by @person. You would also be advised that if you used a debit card or a Credit Card that you seek to have it cancelled and a new card issued. If you used a payment service such as PayPal raise a dispute there as well.

There are many bad businesses online that seek to take advantage of people, this may just be another of that ilk.

Thank you – credit card cancelled already! Bendigo bank could not have been more helpful and well informed. Normally I use only Paypal, although Bendigo just told me that they can also get hacked. What a pain!

As is often the case consumers should minimally do cursory if not more diligent checks of e-commerce web site before ordering, not after. It is especially applicable when a web site name includes a city, a country, or includes similar references in the name, eg OZERTY.

Noting of course that this can be a total pain in the proverbial as you need to deal with any automatic charges that are associated with the old card and, at your leisure, you need to deal with any web sites that have remembered the old card details.

I’m not certain that you will get a chargeback though unless you ask for one. I mean it’s obvious to the bank but commonsense does not always apply …

This.

If dealing with an online company for the first time, unless they are obviously high-profile and well known, definitely sniff around before transacting.
