Nbn free fibre to the home connection

I live in regional NSW, in a residential street. No foot paths but every home has a concrete driveway. I’ve had 2 nbn technctians tell me I can’t be connected with fibre to the premises because the closest Telstra pitt is on the opposite side of the driveway to my actual house. Every other square inch of surrounding area, apart from driveway, is grass on sand.
How do they manage to connect fibre to the premises in cities when surrounded by concrete.
Is this true or are the technicians just avoiding a slightly difficult job?
Seems bizarre to me.

Welcome to the Community @Maggie2

Apologies this is a facebook reel, but it is not a difficult task.

and a youtube.

You should ask your ISP or the technicians for a written report detailing their problem.

In a simple scenario a water jet or horizontal drill can be used to make a channel under the driveway. They can put in a conduit and run whatever through the conduit.

If they continue making excuses you should make a formal complaint to the NBN Corp as well as the ACCC and for good measure, your state fair trading office and if you do not know your MP personally, perhaps a good time to meet them. My list is probably overkill, but.

If you had a copper connection that went to the pit and the conduit it runs in is still in good condition this can be used without the need for horizontal drilling. There is also the option of you digging the trench on either side of the driveway to the required depth and then getting a hole placed under the driveway by a contractor. We managed our underground 3 phase connection this way, while not quite the same as a fibre optic connection, we just had to ensure we had the correct depth of pit for the cables to be laid and that the conduit placed under the driveway was of the correct dimension. It is easy to ask a certified nbn cabler what is required.

The NBN Co contract has ample funding for most works that are from a somewhat close pit to a home, it also incorporates an amount for internal cabling in the house to the wall unit (somewhere around 20 to 30 metres of cabling). They just try to minimise the cost in their favour. So, does it have to cross your driveway to get to a wall of the house? If not ask them to cable to that point and then if required cable from that wall to the nbn box. Internally in our house the cable runs around 15.5 metres from the wall junction box. The junction box was simply so they could drill a hole in the wall to pass the cable through the wall and then across the roof cavity to the network termination device in our garage on the opposite side of the house.

Junction box on the wall and not to be confused with the network termination device (NTD) where the fibre optic carried light signals are converted to digital data and vice versa
