They are. I just mean that if I didn’t already own a power meter, my starting point would be getting one that does not have WiFi or Bluetooth, and does not rely on a crapp that you have to run on a smartphone.
Possibly something like.
‘Power-Mate Lite Professional Power Meter - 10 Amp
Re stated accuracy no assurance for loads of less than 2W. Not sure I could justify the cost vs benefit.
Even that would be sufficient for the problem as reported in the OP.
At the cheaper end of the market: https://www.jaycar.com.au/mains-power-meter/p/MS6115 or https://www.jaycar.com.au/mains-power-meter-with-extendable-lcd-display/p/MS6108 although I can’t personally vouch for either of those.
In terms of the cheaper of those two, payback period would be about 6 months (for the specific malfunctioning appliance discussed in the OP - could be a lot shorter payback period for a malfunctioning appliance with higher power consumption).
If you are really concerned about cost then maybe it is an option to borrow one from someone you know who already has one.
That second Jaycar monitor looks like what I am looking for. The price looks right. And could pay for itself very quickly if my TV was indeed using much more power in standby than it is supposed to.
