I don’t know if it depends on the Apple Mail app and/or Safari browser, but you would certainly need to have an iCloud mailbox to use it. The Hide My Email service also seems to require iCloud+.
However, there are quite a few other ‘hidden email’ services that you could certainly use with Gmail and Chrome. Most have a limited free version and various levels of paid service.
