Grocers price increases - much higher than inflation?

A point made is that specials are overweighted in products like crisps, chocolates, ice creams, soft drinks and what I would broadly call ‘high markup items’ as well as targeted staple products that are hit or miss whether we buy them, but the ads look enticing. Some products are at reduced prices, this week 20% off next week 50% and the following 5% that creates some urgency when ‘we’ need it or the price is right to stock up. Other products having ‘low or down down prices’ are often the current every day prices, often compared to some peak price over the past year that is now irrelevant but makes the price look highly reduced. Psychology and gaming.

We like many here stock up when products we normally buy are on special but consumers who follow Choice are not always representative of the wider customer base who get attracted to a special or two, and then do their whole shop at the store despite possibly high(er) prices on the rest. That is what the master marketeers want and often get from ‘us’. There is a related topic about multi-store shops.
