“Grease Police” not performing as advertised

G’Day @BrendanMays, I wish to raise the subject of TV advertising , is there any law or standard that governs advertising companies ? to make them accountable for truth and realistic content ?:"
I wish to draw your attention to the TV commercial that is presently being broadcasted by the company known as Deals Direct. In particular the promotion of a product called " Grease Police "
I believe this advertising to be very misleading and FAKE . I purchased this product , BUT it does not stand up to the purpose for which this company are advertising .
Thank you Ivan

Hi @IVAN

I have moved your post into its own topic about the product you are asking about. There are rules about advertising standards, but what is termed puffery is also allowed. Advertising oversight is a self regulated industry for the most part.

You might like to read a topic on the subject of puffery (Truth in Advertising, should we accept Puffery) we have on this site, and it certainly is something that is also discussed elsewhere on the web. This doesn’t mean the claims of the product you purchased are covered by the puffery defences, and you certainly can make complaints to Fair Trading, the ACCC, and the Ad Standards Organisation (https://adstandards.com.au/about/ad-standards) as starters.

You are also within your rights to contact Deals Direct and ask for a refund under the Australian Consumer Law.

The grounds for a refund is that:

  • it isn’t fit for purpose; and
  • the product doesn’t match its extra promises, namely the claims made through product advertising.

There is enough evidence online indicating it is a sham product that doesn’t work as advertised.

If Deal Direct refuse to give a refund, say you will be lodging a complaint with your local office of fair trading and/or will be instigating a credit card chargeback. Keep details records of interaction with Deals Direct, as this may be needed to pursue your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.

We have had similar issues about 6 months ago with another product (Easy Off Bam Oven & BBQ Everyday Cleaner Spray) which didn’t perform as outlined on the label. We tried it to usual aerosol oven cleaner, based on their marketing and label claims. It was about as good, or maybe worse, than using water for cleaning an oven. We weren’t alone discovering the product’s performance. We returned it to Woolies and requested a refund - which we got. We said they should consider taking it off their shelves as it was a product that didn’t work. I see they still sell it.
