Attn,
I hope this message finds you well. My name is Barrister Cliford Jose, and I serve as the legal advisor to the late Mr. Robert Fitzpatrick, who tragically lost his life in the 1999 Egypt Air crash. Prior to his passing, Mr. Fitzpatrick deposited a substantial sum of $21 million in a financial institution. Unfortunately, he did not leave behind any known heirs or next of kin to claim these funds.
Given this situation, I am reaching out to you with a confidential and mutually beneficial proposal. If you are willing to act as the next of kin, I can guide and support you through the legal process required to release and transfer these funds. All arrangements will be handled professionally and discreetly.
Upon successful completion, the total amount will be shared equally between us, with 50% allocated to you and the remaining 50% to me for my assistance and facilitation.
Please consider this opportunity carefully and let me know if you are interested in proceeding. I will provide further details upon your response.
I liked this one because it was sooo bad it was funny. What I don’t understand is why bother sending such ridiculous scams such as this, I know many people get scammed of money and that’s terrible but I find it hard to believe anyone would fall for something is stupid as this.
I’ve unusually received three of these in the last week, all quite ridiculous. I guess at least it’s a change and makes me laugh
And we should acknowledge that the whole thing is a scam and noone is ever getting anything, so there is certainly no tax to be paid.
But per the quoted text in the OP, if it is really an investment gone bad and you are subsequently paid compensation then I would suggest getting taxation advice from a qualified professional because there could be taxation consequences.
The Treasury Department has facilitated the deployment of capital to make sure all previously unpaid/unclaimed funds and benefits are paid to respective beneficiaries. We have been directed to expedite the payment of all outstanding compensation/inheritance funds owed to individuals and small businesses from previous years and be sure that all funds are paid to deserving beneficiaries as soon as possible.
As a result of this development, you have been selected alongside a few other beneficiaries to receive a payment of $1,250,000 (One Million Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollars only).
To this effect, you are eager to provide your personal details as requested below to enable us process your payment;
Oh, yes, Mr Bessent, I am eager to receive $1.25m by handing over my identity theft details. And that’s presumably US$1.25m, not banana republic dollars.
Given that the US government has almost $40 trillion dollars of debt, I think they need the $1.25m more than I do. So there you go, Mr Bessent, you can keep it.
(Mr Bessent is the real Secretary of the Treasury and the above link is valid and safe, and to a reputable web site, political debates aside. But I’m sure the US government has nothing to do with this Nigerian 419 scam. Having only valid links to reputable or expected web pages is one of the techniques that spammers use to improve their chances of getting past anti-spam.)
And my credit card is going to be loaded with €3,500,000 …
:
As a result, the European Central Bank (ECB), in collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Bundeskriminalamt (BKA), and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has authorized a more secure and efficient payment method intended to ensure delivery of your entitled funds without third-party interference or complications.
Please note that these funds represent compensation for victims of fraud. According to this notification, law enforcement agencies recovered assets valued at more than €500 million from criminal fraud operations. Following a court-ordered restitution process, compensation payments of €3,500,000 have reportedly been approved for selected beneficiaries whose information was recovered from the case files. You have been identified as one of the eligible recipients.
and all I have to do is hand over my identity theft details (again).
Edit: Again, I think there’s an element of self-selection in targeting scam victims. Someone who has already been a victim of a scam and who has learned nothing from the experience but somehow thinks that it must be legitimate because the mark was previously the victim of a scam … self-selects to be scammed again, first by handing over identity theft details and second in an “advance-fee scam” (Nigerian 419 scam).
