Deluxe Scrubber

Dear all, I was happy when unusually Choice recommended this “TV” product. I’d bought one a few years earlier and have loved it. My problem is finding where to purchase a replacement battery. Can anyone help me find one? Thank you.

Hi @Mare60, is it possible to know that the deluxe scrubber model and make is? Is it this one…

It is useful to know the exact model number and make to see a replacement battery can he found.

Thank you. The pamphlet that came with the Scrubber states replacement battery number is NI-CD SC1300MAH 3.6V
I hope this helps as I can’t see model number.

Cheers.

SC1300mAh 3.6V is the capacity and voltage rating of the battery. These batteries come in different configurations/shapes depending on the device they go onto.

EBay has some for another similar scrubber:

but it is hard to know if this battery or similar will be compatible with your scrubber.

An option may be to take the scrubber to a specialist battery supplier near you (do an internet search for battery suppliers near you) and see if they are willing to open the scrubber and determine the exact battery type. They might be able to source a battery for you. The downside may be the replacement battery is about the same price as a new scrubber.

Alternatively, if you know a suitable person to open the scrubber for you, they can remove the battery and you can then check whether those such as on EBay will be compatible. This is a cheaper option, but has risks of the battery being the wrong size to fix in the scrubber.

I assume the battery doesn’t pop out a door but if it does just match the battery in a shop or online. Your specification is common but you need to match the diameter and length so it will fit.

If it is not readily taken apart to remove the battery do you have a ‘Repair Cafe’ in your area? Click here for an example in Nillumbik Shire VIC.

Another option is to seek out a local Men’s Shed - there are many of them across the country. I suspect they would be happy to help out getting it apart so you can see the battery you need.

I bought that one also, a long time ago and when the battey died, I assumed that was the end of it. I’ll be looking more closely at the scrubber to see if I have missed something. I no longer have the instruction book.

This type of battery will have memory problems as it is Ni-Cd. There are methods to extend the lifetime of them, usually involves complete drain of the charge before recharging it. If half way through a scrub this could be an issue depending on how long it takes to recharge the fixed battery. NiMh would be a better type or Lithium, but I’m not sure they would be suitable to install and the charger will certainly need to be changed if the battery chemistry is different to Ni-Cd.

Never put the scrubber on a recharge if a Ni-Cd until the battery is fully flat. This will help to reduce the loss of capacity due to the memory effect of Ni-Cd technology. if capacity has reduced due to the memory effect sometimes a full charge and then discharge and repeated a few times can remove some of the memory effect but it is not a certain outcome. NiMh tech reduced this memory effect, as did Lithium but all suffer reduction in capacity over time and recharges. Just NiMh and Lithium have a longer lifespan when treated properly, Lithium in fact benefits most when not flattened prior to recharging and recharging only to about 80% of full capacity. Most Lithium battery chargers are smart re-chargers and help maintain the battery health by only charging to a safer point than absolute 100%.

Thank you. The booklet not only gives the battery number required but also shows how to replace it. I joined can’t find the battery.

I did the same thing with my first one. This is my second one. :weary::weary:

Places like Battery World can repack some batteries, can be hit and miss, and Battery World will only repack (possibly lucky in your case) NiMh & Ni-Cd batteries. There are other businesses who offer similar services but Battery World is fairly well known and has multiple locations that may then offer a chance for you to take it in personally to be checked. I can’t say if their service will suit your problem but it may offer some hope.

Another few that may warrant you contacting them

Please note I have not used any of these businesses except Battery World (and that was a long time ago as I no longer have Ni-Cd battery powered devices). So none are a recommendation, they are purely to help you find a possible means to replace your battery.

If all else fails, it maybe of interest BigW and other retailers including Kogan appear to have the same or similar products at various price points. Perhaps some (lower cost) are less well performing?

Note this is not a recommendation for any of the products or BigW. It’s just how the bots at Google responded to by broader question. The two most convenient (20-30km each way) stores to us to see this type of product first hand are BigW or Bunnings.

There are multiple alternate similar purpose products by others, not necessarily with the long arm or handle.
EG - Bunnings:
Ryobi 18V ONE+ Compact Power Scrubber - Tool Only - Bunnings Australia
Also available in kits with a long arm.

Or this cheapie.

Not sure if Choice has this type of product on it’s to do list. It’s unlikely to break the bank purchasing products to test. Finding suitable test sites? If the current supposed dry summer keeps up - :joy:. Likely, to be plenty of volunteered sites.

Selecting the most appropriate cleaning products for the task also important.

Check on Google. Always got an answer.
Bunnings are good for purchasing larger batteries.

Thank you. I did Google it but haven’t tried Bunnings.

Bunnings won’t have replacement batteries for your scrubber. They only have standard battery sizes and some spare batteries for products they sell (e.g. power tools, solar lights).

The battery in the scrubber will be a non-standard battery pack designed to fit with the limited space of the scrubber.

Just received the latest version from an online Aussie retailer. It appears to be reasonably well made (ABS plastic). Whether what’s inside is?

The instructions note the rechargeable battery is NiMH technology. The charger is nominally 5.9v 750mA DC rated. It’s now on charge before first use. Note the instructions say not to leave the brush on charge for more than 12 hrs. IE not an intelligent charger. There’s no other info for the battery pack.

There is at least one YouTube showing repair of the product as supplied to the US market. It appears to differ in respect of the battery and accessibility. The battery unit in the switch handle portion according to the YouTube can be taken out after undoing two screws adjacent to the on off switch. They are not evident on the product we received. The internal battery appears in the US version to be a single cell with a 3.6V nominal voltage. It’s supposedly readily available from local electrical stores. From the type number it is a lithium ion battery. Not the same as the Aussie supplied product. It requires a different type of charger, charging circuit to suit. Not a suitable replacement for Aust, and high risk of starting a fire if incorrectly used/charged.

A guess is the currently supplied Aussie product contains a pack of 3-4 x NiMH cells. If they can be accessed they are likely to have ready replacements. Some skills and care needed. Older Aussie supplied units may have accessible screws per the US model. Note there are 2 screws in a different location on the power head end of the battery handle section of the current Aussie model. They may or may not release the battery switch assembly. I’m not about to try on a brand new brush, $69 plus shipping. Not until it’s proven itself or otherwise.

If anyone has found a way to access the battery switch assembly inside the handle feel free to share.

Thanks everyone for your input. Maybe I’m too lazy to try and find a battery replacement solution. I think I’ll just buy a new appliance. However, I’d like to thank the whole community for trying to help me with this problem.
