Having just read the report on modern day slavery I was surprised/disappointed no mention of PALM visa scheme - abuse of workers within the Government sanctioned visa scheme. The chatter is the government turns a blind eye in order to pacify rural industries.
It is worth noting that it is a small minority of employers which it is alleged have been ‘unscrupulous’ in relation to PALM visa holders:
There are many (vast majority, possibly close to 100%) which value workers who have come to Australia on the PALM visa scheme, and meet or exceed minimum employment conditions.
The alleged ‘unscrupulous’ employers shouldn’t diminish the benefits of the PALM visa scheme to the agricultural sector as well as those (and their families) who are grateful for opportunities the scheme provides.
It is worth noting modern day slavery continues in Australia - The Australian Institute continues to report in why PALM visa holders continue to disengage.
Australian Anti-Slavery Commissioner urges stronger action to support disengaged PALM workers.
