Are Masters Closing sale discounts real or are Bunnings lowering their prices

Spent some time in both stores today, and 30-40% discounts from Masters, seem to be much the same as the Bunnings prices. Did Masters put their prices up before starting the closing sale, or have Bunnings brought theirs down.
Don’t know enough to make a formal accusation, but it seems odd!

I’m no expert but my guess would be that Masters are advertising the sale from recommended retail price (that no one sells at anyway) whereas Bunnings have the buying power to simply sell lower than the recommended price as standard practice.

Early on in the “sale” a product with an RRP of $19.95 was going for a whopping 10% off, make if $18.00. The same product is available at Officeworks 24 x 7 for $14.32. Make your own conclusions.

I think some consumers associate "closing down sale " with cheaper prices . It is not always the case as shown above .

Given the current situation and dreadful managament, Woolworths are hardly likely to ‘sell’ cheaply. They have to make as much money as possible for their suitors. Bunnings may be returning to the dis-organisation of pre Masters [especially in Mandurah], but their value is still good.

One of the funny things to notice here is that Bunnings does not have sales… Their prices are always the same just different products advertised.

masters - RRP, but no discount at checkout. Maybe ‘you’ have to complain and ‘push’.

I am skeptical. We bought a 10 litre tin of decking oil. Their price on the shelf was for another product with a very similar name, just a slight difference and was considerably more $$. Didn’t notice at the checkout and once you have paid for it there are NO RETURNS. Staff are obviously not happy employees because they were rude and very unhelpful when we pointed out the price tag on the shelf. A very big buyer beware situation.

Has anyone thought of trying Mitre 10 or similar independent? They compete well on price and you are supporting a local small business and not lining the pockets of the big corporates.

That’s an excellent suggestion. Bunnings has unfortunately put a lot of the smaller independents out of business, but I still use them when I can – Mitre 10, Home Timber & Hardware, MagnetMart, or somewhere like Carbatec or Inspirations Paint for the specialist stuff that Bunnings knows nothing about.

I always bought from independents on principle, but as I predicted over 20 years ago, Bunnings has put them out of business. No more Mitre 10 in my area. Now it’s a half hour drive to Bunnings for the most basic needs.

Masters prices don’t seem to have reduced at all - they appear to be the same as before the “sale”. I checked products against prices in Bunnings, just accross the road from Masters, and found them tpo be the same, in some cases slightly dearer !!
