Almond spread contains 23% almonds

A consumer sent this through, highlighting that the spread only contains 23% almonds, whereas a product likeMayver’s Almond Spread is 100% almonds.

How do you feel about this? Should there be more almonds, or is it acceptable as long as it tastes good. Share your thoughts below.

Wow!

What are Bega thinking?

Assume their branded cheese is more than 23% cheese still and not made from imported ingredients?

Yep, enough to raise eyebrows.

You may recall the peanut butter taste test (member content) favoured the taste of butters with less peanut content! Not quite this much of a differential between 23% and 100%, but.

‘We’ love sugar, fat, and salt and especially ‘natural and artificial flavouring’.

@BrendanMays, you should submit it for a Shonky nomination from ‘the consumer’ on principal if not taste. As with the difference between ‘drink’ and ‘juice’ Choice should lobby for mandated content in ‘butters’, ‘spreads’, and whatever this would be called.

Should be called almond flavoured spread.

Yes, or almondish spread.

Another interesting point is there is more maltodextrin than almonds. Maltodextrin can be classed as a sugar or an oligosaccharide, either way it and the main ingredient oil are ‘empty calories’. And there is more sugar as well.

this product label is also a contender for the “unnecessary added sugars” campaign:
1 an oil
2 a sugar
3 almonds (23%)
4 milk solids
5 a sugar
