Because it is electrical goods, it usually is not an approved procedure for a home user to repair many of these goods electrical circuits. They need to be done by a licensed tradesperson, either a technician or electrician.

Low voltage circuits and similar can often be done by the home handyman/handywoman, so replacing things like a power supply or a motherboard in a PC would be something that could be done by the owner, but pulling apart the power supply to repair it is not something that should be done by someone not approved to do so.

One of the key points of the inquiry outcomes/recommendations was:

A ‘right to repair’ is the ability of consumers to have their products repaired at a competitive price using a repairer of their choice. Realising this aspiration in a practical way involves a range of policies, including consumer and competition law, intellectual property protections, product labelling, and environmental and resource management.

This is not a statement of the ability to repair at home, rather it states it is the ability to have the product repaired at a competitive price using a repairer of their choice. This means not being locked into using only the service approved or provided by the manufacturer/retailer.

Whether one agrees or not, we have many, many, many highly restrictive laws and regulations about electrical safety. Whether one deems them reasonable or not Choice is unable to contradict them or suggest ways to circumvent them.

Reminded me of something like:

We, too, have a Sunbeam Toastermatic TA-40, given to us as a wedding present way back in 1967. We have used it ever since and we love it. But it has become a bit erratic in its operation. Does anyone know of a place/company/person who could service/repair it? (We live in Sydney).

Search in your locality for a ‘Repair Cafe’ that has qualified appliance repairers available. Many problems with toasters can be rectified by cleaning certain parts although sometimes having to replace them.

Repair cafes are generally free services often provided by retirees, some ask one to book in so they can match service providers with ‘customers’ on the day, and most are happy to accept donations.

It is common each operates once per month.
