The advice in the referenced drinking water PFAS removal article refers to a Reverse Osmosis dual filtration system. This involves two stages of RO filtration filtering the water twice. IE taking the water from a primary RO system and running it through a second RO system. Dual RO filters required.
Dual filtration if it is not RO will not be effective.
For filter cartridges with activated carbon, or chemistry which rely on forming weak bonds with unwanted chemicals and metals - the greatest concern is not knowing for sure when the filter reaches maximum capture capacity. Different to sediment capture which causes flow restrictions in a filter and increasing back pressure which is readily monitored.
The statement of efficiency of up to 70% capture of PFAS by activated carbon may not provide adequate assurance. Especially if the water source contains PFAS more than 3 times the maximum permitted level in a water supply. What a filer does not capture will appear in the drinking supply at levels at least as high as the maximum considered acceptable.

It seems there was a failure in keeping water supplies to safe levels of PFASâ from about 1992. Perhaps why they have installed the system they have. Begs some questions as to adherence to standards perhaps? If there is a failure, how long will it take to get clarity about an issue and rectification as needed?
Filters may be of a greater need than we might suspect?
I personally believe itâs better to drink tap water for the dental benefits of fluoride. However I always use filtered water to lengthen the lives of my electric kettle and espresso coffee machine. I have to replace two filters annually (sediment and chemicalâcost $100) and have recently replaced the thick plastic filter holders which developed cracks after about 20 yearsâ usage (cost $200). I also had to replace a dripping faucet over the sink (cost $45) and didnât need to call in a plumber for any of those jobs. So itâs quite an affordable convenience bearing in mind that the annual servicing can be a hassle until you get the tricks of controlling leaks by using Vaseline and plumbersâ tape.

Machine is easy to clean and they supplied a box of Coconut Carbon Filters, Distiller Cleaner stuff. In some rarer cases (some similar to the one I was responding to) there is a preference to remove fluoride from water supplies. Then it is important that the filters used do in fact remove or substantially reduce the amount of fluoride in the water.
Safe to drink to âthe Water standardsââŠ.that are updated once in a while when there is unwanted chemicals in the tap water like we saw in NSW with PFOA. Although now they have NEW standards, the limits are ridiculously high compare to other countries.
Chlorine is a must to desinfect the water but not so good for our health. Tap water contains also small amount of aluminium (used in the treatment plant) with many countries trying to remove it. It also contains microplastics that treatment plants are not designed to remove. And letâs not forget about the pipesâŠhundreds of kilometers of pipes that hopefully are well maintained to avoid any cross contaminations of pesticides and heavy metals.
So if someone just want to remove smell of chlorine and chlorine, go for a GAC jug but a RO filter is the best to remove anything else that the treatment plant canât filter out.

We have water from the roof tank water which also has health and other risks. A suggestion for any who have concerns that their water supply is not compliant would be to have that supply tested. There are numerous providers (utility and independent). The cost is reasonable. Our water was tested at the end of last year, before and after treatment/filtration.
I agree with OPs suggestion for a wide-ranging review of home water filtration. That said, my reason is a little different as I find the industry and standards do not make it easy for consumers to cost effectively choose a water filtration system (which includes any consumables such as cartridges).
Accepting that Australian consumerâs home water vary in quality a first natural approach in selecting a filter would be to test the water. The results of that test would, one assumes, aid in matching the filter solution to the water test results context.
In reality, while a water test will provide a range of quantified chemical and physical properties the current standards and industry norms do not allow a consumer to use these as cartridges in particular provide only descriptive criteria. Such criteria is not only ambiguous but often obfuscates important aspects.
Just say a water tests produces a hardness result of xx. By contrast a cartridge description might say âsoftenerâ and/or âhardnessâ absent any further quantitative specifications. How long does the cartridge provide a counter to the hardness result? Well less time for harder and more for softer but no precision either way
Itâs the same for every other water test result characteristic. There is no capacity to match to the water result, let alone to the objective (which can vary, too). And the standards are equally weak as they only require the manufacturerâs product to do (to an unspecified degree) what their description says.
