The perils of media serving algorithms

Things are getting tougher online for data collectors. In addition to the European Union’s GDPR, California has passed legislation requiring that its citizens be able to opt out of having their personal data sold, and request that it be deleted.

On the heels of that comes a new standard - Do Not Track v2.0, that based upon these new consumer protections will hopefully finally have teeth.

I can confirm that my browser is sending Sec-Gpc: 1

The one which makes me laugh is that if I purchase, say, a new toilet seat, I start getting ads for toilet seats.

As though, having bought one, I am going to want 5 more!

They must think I live in a mansion!

When ads appear l always go to top of box and tick the not interested or offensive options  Then they are confused and send suggestions l can easily ignore :+1:t3:

I sometimes wish the internet had never been commercialised. When it was in the hands of Universities (and the Australian Vice Chancellors) it was so much simpler. Nobody trying to sell you stuff you dont need or want, nobody hacking you, nobody stalking you, nobody trolling you (ok yes there were trolls and hackers back then but the intent was more benign than it is now)…

The net community was just… nicer… Bring back Gopher!

Those were the days @SueW. Mind you plenty of trolls and loons on Usenet groups then.

They are worse than ever. I still drop in to usenet from time to time, but am never sure why I bothered. When I first was diagnosed with sleep apnea, there was a support group there which was really helpful. The trolls soon overran it.
