Meter numbers have been assigned to a wrong address because of errors in the input of data into the power company records. Nothing is certain when it comes to errors being promulgated in systems.

The supply address on my electricity account was recently and incorrectly changed, for some unknown reason (i.e. unknown to me, anyway), to that of a neighboring property with which I have no connection what so ever .
I contacted my energy retailer to point out the mistake. They assured me that the error would be fixed. And, indeed, that appeared to be the case when I got my latest account i.e. my billing and supply address were back to being the same - as they have always been.

I guess I should have twigged sooner, and I see the suggestions are all here one way or another! I have established that 1)the meter number is different to the meter number on the bill, and 2) the meter reading is completely different to that shown on the bill (on 24 Feb this year the bill showed the reading (end reference) as 9618).
