Spam, Junk Mail, Email Scams, Phishing, etc issues

I had a sus looking offer from Westpac a few years ago so rang and they immediately went into hysterics about it being a scam and cancelled my card. Being an IT type I continued the dialogue with Westpac citing the domain name and other aspects of the sus incoming. They subsequently discovered and confirmed it was in fact a poorly executed Westpac marketing campaign. They apologised because I was needlessly without a card until the plastic replacement appeared in my post box, as was the norm back then. Their reason for reacting as they did was that the front line agents were trained that anything sus had to be a scam/skim/hack and they reacted accordingly. Their training (internal processes?) was subsequently upgraded to check some basics prior to taking knee jerk action.

Whether an offer is a scam is sometimes discoverable using the well protected PC (and a healthy amount of suspicion and scepticism) to check the web site it takes one to, focusing on the domain name being correct for the business, as a starter, then all other aspects and links.

It is always prudent to not do anything one does not feel safe nor confident to do.
