I reckon it’s scammish. They get you in on a promise, but can’t necessarily deliver, and they don’t care.
I went in to Aldi at 5 p.m. for their special on lamb chops on the first day of the special week. None on the shelves, so enquired. Got told none left, and, “Well it is 5 p.m.” So pissed off. I’ve learnt since not to go out of my way to a store for one particular special, as you may not get it. If I’m already in store for my weekly shop, I will see if I can get any advertised specials I need.
@Heather3 Coles do provide rainchecks. This is evidenced by me personally seeing one issued two weeks ago, statements on the Coles website and information in recent posts in this thread.

I asked for a raincheck at Coles just yesterday and had no problem, I only ask when they have a special and no stock on the shelf, in that respect they are good.
