Experts sound alarm on electricity demand tariffs

@MaryS your new post has been moved to this existing topic discussing Demand Tariffs.

We’ve a Demand tariff based bill at one property (Energex the distributor) and AGL the Retailer, for urban Brisbane. It only just works for us as we have NG (gas) to provide all cooking and hot water. We use Solar PV during the day. The base tariff for energy used is lower than the flat rate (default) offer by AGL. However there is an added tariff (penalty) added each month based on the highest 30minute peak use recored in the evening peak time for the month. One needs to manage use in the evening peak or one will likely be worse off. We will use the reverse cycle AC in the evening peak, but only if it has been on earlier in the day to cool or heat the living area minimising load in the evening.

It’s difficult to say whether you will be better off without further details of the plan you were on, the new plan, your daily usage pattern and whether you have solar PV etc. Your smart meter consumption history in 30 minute intervals will be available to you to assist in assessing.

Did Red advise the change as part of their offer to move you from our previous retailer or did you come across on a non demand based tariff plan? Have gone back to Red and asked for a comparison with their best flat rate or a ToU tariff?

The current topic and the following include some answered on how to obtain past consumption data, as well as the moving target of tariff changes in Qld.

I’m not across the latest for SE Qld. Others may note:
