Camera Surveillance at Self Checkouts

I’m a fan of the old way, personalised checkout service. Mostly because the operators are several times more efficient than I am at pushing the buttons and scanning. The personalised checkout operators also make mistakes.

Expecting most shoppers are honest and reliable and are those customers better off for doing it themselves?

Apparently some US retailers are turning away from self checkout.

I can understand the concerns about theft, but customer loyalty?

Cameras are not a concern.Remember they have them all around the store anyway

More concerning is what happens to the images.

The quality of the image on a surveillance checkout would be much better than as captured by in-store cameras. However the badness is additive, not subtractive. More cameras, more badness.

~$10 at Officeworks - lasts just over 1000 shops  Doesn’t help with the overhead cameras, but it fixes the camera in your face. A wide brimmed hat could complete the story, but I never bother …

My shopping list is often written on a post-it note - making it extremely handy at the checkout.
