Not under the current arrangement. Keep in mind Auspost is a government company and from experience government agencies are not to be in competition with private for profit entities.

If the Post Office in say Cooper Pedy became a bank it would be necessary for the GPOs in capital cities to also become banks as a matter of consistency. Any other arrangement would put the Post Office at the behest and control of the banks, would it not?

Thanks for asking. As the OP for this one, that would be a different topic to that envisaged although quite a few excursions have occurred; the original being the difficulties/benefits of a cashless society rather than focusing on the banking industry.
