Hopefully it cannot happen in Australia but who knows.

Could happen in Australia as it was straight out fraud. The basis was someone passed themselves off as the owner and transferred title to another. He was aided by having knowledge of the owner (was an ex-boyfriend).

This is more concerning https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-10-30/sydney-squatting-laws-home-on-market/11652336
This is why Wills and estates need to be more tightly controlled. If you were unaware that you were mentioned in a Will and the Executor failed to inform you, then your asset may never end up in your hands, or under squatting laws, end up in someone else’s. In this case the inheritors did not engage with their property which allowed this property developer to “squat” even though he didn’t live there himself but rented it out, and eventually claim the house through the courts.
