Mont-Bell Lock-On last for years, comfortable and grippy.
I take them on bike tours to swap from cleats when walking. Safe even on rocky trails. Expensive but they work.

Another option is to get leather thongs (only the sole is rubber)…not as cheap as traditional thongs, but good quality ones will be stronger. I don’t particular like them as they aren’t overly good in sweating or wet environments…but some prefer them due to the longevity. Just make sure they are the real deal (not faux leather) and the straps at sewn rather than end in plugs or glued.
