Indeed, being able to clearly see the ground, and watching where you are walking! is the best protection. They really are not interested in biting unless threatened - I’ve had dozens of close encounters with brown and black snakes around here over the years on foot and mountain biking, and not had one look like it wanted to strike while I stood still or very slowly moved away.

The solar powered snake repellers are 100% useless. A friend of my daughter had these things on her rural property and found a snake curled up around one!
Ask for scientific proof that they work.
