Viscose or otherwise known as Rayon is a form of cellulose fibre and does break down. The process to manufacture it is however a dirty industry process.
More environmentally safer similar products that use more closed system processes are lyocell (Tencel is a trademarked lyocell), Modal, and acetate.
Cellulose is a carbohydrate found in the walls of plant cells that help them stay upright. What does this have to do with fashion? For starters, cellulose is the core structure from which plant-based materials like cotton, hemp, linen, and jute are...
It may have come from Bamboo but it is unlikely to now be Bamboo, indeed it could as easily be called rayon or viscose rayon. From Wikipedia:
“Modern clothing labeled as being made from bamboo is usually viscose rayon , a fiber made by dissolving the cellulose in the bamboo, and then extruding it to form fibres. This process removes the natural characteristics of bamboo fibre, rendering it identical to rayon from other cellulose sources.”
It can also be Modal or Lyocell fabric/textile, TENCEL…
We also have some topics about much of this on the Community but this one should cover most of it.
There have been some posts in the past and currently that refer to Bamboo being in the fabric, in the mix of materials in the Fabric, or indeed question this. Is it really Bamboo or is it a material that has been derived from Bamboo. We have moved these posts to this section of the site as we look for the best answers. BS Buster Badges will be awarded to those posters who provide good and supported answers.
The previous posts have been moved to this topic to keep them together.
