I don’t know how they come up with the figure that was lost, I think it would only be a guesstimate based on reported losses. What about those who do not report and just paid by whatever means and accepted it was the ATO after all?

Police arrest 2 alleged scammers who stole over $90,000 in 2 months from 7 persons by pretending to be police with arrest warrants.
I find it incredible that anyone would actually believe that the police would want to be paid with gift cards.
