New Computer (un)reliabilty & warranty

Under consumer law you should be able to expect a $2,000 piece of equipment to continue operating for more than one year. An extended warranty is simply a profit centre for the company, which earns much more than it will ever spend in meeting warranty demands.

My Microsoft Surface laptop had serious problems after 2 years and 9 months - an expanding battery. JB HiFi sent it back to Microsoft and 6 weeks later I had a replacement. It’s possible it was refurbished but it looks new and the battery has a similar life to what the old one had when new.

That’s the way it should work. I’m happy to pay for a good computer and I know things can go wrong but I can live with that if the problem is resolved.

That was a good outcome, but 6 weeks seems a bit long even with JB as middleman.

From previous experience I expected that timeframe so I made sure I had a backup system to work on in the meantime.
