Know your lentils

Can anyone help me here?
Trying to expand my recipe repertoire, I bought these split red lentils.

They certainly seemed to look like what my recipe specified. But what does the ingredients list on the pack mean?

I am confused. There are so many different sorts of lentils, but are split red lentils, that I have used for years, really black lentils unskilled?
Help please….

I mean unskinned.

I am no lentil expert, but they certainly look like red lentils to me.
Black lentils would not look red. Perhaps a typo on the packaging?

Generally red lentils are yellow lentils that have been hulled and split.

Black split lentils are urad dahl or black gram dahl. Urad dahl has a grey cream to cream colour.

It appears the ingredients may be in err or the product is a uncommon lentil variety, where the black lentil has a orange/red interior.

Either way, they are red dahl and can be used in recipes as such.
