I wonder if it is due to the plastic/foil seal which is often heat sealed to the rim of the bottle top. When removing this seal, which is appearing on more and more products), often the rim is not smooth are completely free of the seal. Any small imperfections could lead to a leak when the cap is replaced and the bottle is laid on its side.
