Whilst not an online promotion, the ones that always amuse me are the temporary booths in the shopping centres manned by persons offering ā€œfreeā€ entries to win some attractive prize such as an overseas holiday.

ā€œFreeā€ entries in return for what? Selling your personal details to marketing companies? And who knows whether the claimed prizes actually exist, and if they do, who wins them? The promoterā€™s family and friends?

No thanks. I would rather buy a ticket in a legitimate raffle organised by a known ethical organisation.

I definitely avoid online ā€œcompetitionsā€- they are purely data collection, and itā€™s a sure way to receive spam and unwanted phone calls trying to sell something I donā€™t want!

Generally, when reading the fine print, you give all rights away in perpetuity to the organiser and ā€˜selectedā€™ third parties at their discretion.

Also, the odds of winning are generally very low.

No thanks!
