Have your say about funerals in NSW

NSW Government is currently investigating competition and pricing in the NSW funeral industry. This comes after CHOICE released its 4-part investigative series in the funeral industry and awarded a Shonky to InvoCare for failing to disclose its prices across the country.

NSW Government is looking to understand the experience of organising a funeral, as well as ways this process could be improved. This information will help inform the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal’s (IPART) review of the industry.

To have your say, you can vote in a quick poll, share your ideas and stories, or complete the survey. You can participate in as many ways as you’d like at www.haveyoursay.nsw.gov.au/funerals

This is a problem industry that has been buried away from the public gaze for too long.

Rather than list all the things wrong with funeral pricing, suffice to say that generally they use every trick known to marketting to extract more money from clients. This includes exploiting vulnerable people, cleverly camouflaged oligopolistic behaviour, trickle pricing, not giving full disclosure when signing up clients, adding on unnecessary and unrequested extras, emotional blackmail,… etc.

Competition in the funeral industry is all but gone apart from a few niche and family owned businesses.
