Easter Egg Dye

What is it with Easter Egg dye? Every year I follow the instructions implicitly yet most years the results are poor. OK, we start with a disadvantage because we can no longer get white eggs easily but still we should be able to get reasonable results by following the instructions. I only ever use red dye now because the other colours simply look crap on brown eggs. Is it the quality of the dye, poor instructions, the eggs? I accept I may have done something wrong but the instructions should have been idiot proof.

Mix 1 cup pickled beet juice and 1 tablespoon vinegar. Dark pink: These beet - dyed eggs will darken the longer they sit in the liquid. Cut 1 medium beet into chunks and add to 4 cups boiling water. Stir in 2 tablespoons of vinegar and let cool to room temperature; remove beets

Or soak white eggs in beet juice overnight
