It’s best to take them to a pharmacy for correct disposal

We always take ours to the pharmacy. They accept them readily.

The safest way to dispose of any medicines whether ‘over the counter’ or prescription is to take them to the chemist, who will happily dispose of them in the proper and safe manner!

Return them to your local pharmacy for disposal in their RUM bin. The federal government has committed funding to the RUM (Return Unwanted Medicines) Project until 2022. All types of medicines can be returned, prescription, OTC, herbal, complimentary medicines, gels and liquids- those no longer in use or out of date. It also takes medicines for pets. Sharps or restricted medicines can’t be returned and you should talk to the pharmacist about correct disposal for them.

The RUM bin is always in sight of the pharmacist, and when full will be incinerated in an EPA accredited facility. I only found out earlier this year. When I asked the pharmacy assistant they had no idea until they asked the pharmacist. More info can be found at http://www.returnmed.com.au/
