As far as I can ascertain you cannot just forget about the overseas component and just claim the Aussie one instead. I tried that not being aware of being entitled to part pension from New Zealand. Centrelink were the ones that pointed it out and they contacted NZ re. the claim who responded in the affirmative.

That may be correct for NZ as there are particular reciprocal rights between our two nations. The instance I am aware of relates to Italy and perhaps a quite different system of entitlement. Centrelink made no representations in that instance. Centrelink adjust accordingly, and it all seems to work out.
