Business Name Renewal Scams

I don’t think it meets the threshold for illegality.

I would make the comparison with companies who make unsolicited off-market offers to buy your shares in listed, widely held, high profile companies - with the offer being way below actual current market value, either actually or effectively.

This is not illegal but the government fairly quickly changed the law to require the party making the offer to tell you what the current market value is.

So that gives an indication of what government thinking could be. The renewal scammer would be obliged to tell you in the letter what the ASIC fee for the same service would be.

I add in passing that both of these scams are possible because of well-intentioned government measures that require all this information to be public i.e. these are unintended consequences of government regulations and laws.
