What are the defects?

The component supplier of the airbag inflator has advised that it is concerned that the airbag inflators in these vehicles could allow moisture to enter the unit and degrade the airbag propellant. The component supplier has advised that if this occurs, the properties of the propellant may be changed so that the propellant does not react as intended during an accident, causing misdeployment of the airbag. The component supplier has also directly notified these defects to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Authority.

What are the hazards?

According to the component supplier of the airbag inflator, if a vehicle with an affected airbag is involved in a collision, the airbag inflator could rupture, causing sharp metal fragments to enter the vehicle cabin at high speed and kill or injure vehicle occupants.

The component supplier is also concerned that there is also a risk that the airbag may under-inflate in a collision and may not protect the driver as intended.

What should consumers do?

Owners of affected vehicles should immediately contact an authorised Audi Dealer by visiting https://forms.audi.com.au/locate-a-dealer or call Audi Takata Information Line directly on phone number 1800 856 770 to organise their free urgent vehicle inspection.

If a recalled Audi vehicle is identified as containing the affected type of driver airbag about which the component supplier has raised concerns and is validly registered for road use in Australia as at the date on which the recall was announced, Audi Australia will offer to buy back the registered vehicle from the owner at present market value (as determined by an independent third party valuer appointed by Audi).

Due to the age of the vehicles, replacement airbag inflators are not available.

Consumers who are unsure of whether they are affected by this recall can also use the VIN look-up tool available on the Audi website https://forms.audi.com.au/takata-recall, contact the Audi Takata Information Line on 1800 856 770 or contact their preferred Audi dealer.
